Basil Kincaid's quilted work Melanin Activation (2020–2022) was included in America 250: Common Threads at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, an exhibition marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence through 250 years of American art and civic life. Constructed from Kincaid's own clothing, Ghanaian wax fabric, embroidery, and sequins, the piece draws on the artist's family history, seven generations of quilters deep, and its imagery renders the harnessing of solar energy and power. Melanin Activation was recently acquired by Crystal Bridges as part of the museum's permanent collection.

Kincaid's presence in the exhibition extends beyond a single artwork. The Artist conceived a community quilting project for the show, distributing tens of thousands of fabric squares to K-12 students across Arkansas along with a prompt to reflect on the American experience. Those squares, returned to the museum, were pieced together live in the galleries by quilters-in-residence from five local quilting guilds, including Bella Vista Calico Cut-Ups, Q.U.I.L.T. Guild of NW Arkansas, Dogwood Quilters Guild, Pieces N Patches Quilt Club, and Northwest Arkansas Modern Quilt Guild. The demonstrations ran nearly every hour the exhibition was open, turning the galleries into an active, collaborative experience built alongside the museum's youngest visitors.

In July 2026, Kincaid joined the exhibition’s curators in a gallery talk on Melanin Activation, speaking to the Artist’s quilt-making process and the piece's place within the exhibition.

Kincaid will return to Crystal Bridges in Fall 2026 as the museum's artist in residence.
